Why Rainier Junior Rugby?

There are other youth rugby clubs in the region for you to consider-what makes Rainier different & a good option for those living in our typical catchment area of South King & Pierce Counties. Live elsewhere there are no boundary or school district restrictions to prevent you from playing for our club.

Culture: Our club is extremely proud of our tight-knit, family atmosphere and culture, which is developed partially by all of our teams practicing at a single location on the same nights of the week.

Additionally, our welcoming and inclusive attitude reflects the club’s commitment to Inclusion and Diversity. At our club we committed to providing a safe and respectful environment to all of our players and volunteer staff. We have a diverse organization, and we value each member’s uniqueness. Equally important is to welcome any girl or boy who wishes to participate regardless of their family’s ability to pay the designated player membership fees.

We are one of the few clubs in the region that offers the opportunity for girls and boys to start playing when in 1st grade and remain with the club until they graduate from High School. Large families with siblings of various ages and genders commonly take advantage of our sibling discount program and can effectively manage their kids schedules while playing for the same club.

There are no tryouts or cuts associated with our teams and we encourage you to review the website content and in particular the information included in the Potential/ New player tab which is intended to broaden your understanding of how our club operates and how easily you can get your son or daughter involved.

Coaching: Our coaching staff is the heartbeat of the club, and are all unpaid volunteers who we are proud to share their various experience in playing rugby and the unique traditions and expectations of being a rugby player, and also caring for their players as individuals. Our staff features a large mix of experience and much like all of the players they are constantly developing their skills and techniques.

Equally critical are our parent volunteers who fulfill a variety of roles to assist each season to integrate and help new and returning players and parents to insure that they have a fulfilling and worthwhile experience.

Under 10 rugby is the introductory game for rugby in America. Kids and coaches learn and compete in a simplified version of rugby played by a defender tagging an opposition ball carrier. The rules and intention of Under 10 Rugby is too tie together child development, healthy activity, fair play, fun and safety. Non-Contact Rugby is the official start of the player pathway and development of a few basic skills to prepare them for advancement into the Under 12 contact level.

Coed Under 12 contact rugby is the initial full contact & tackle version of rugby which will require the players to learn and develop and array of new skills. It will also increase demands on personal fitness and conditioning to cope with a fast-paced game with few stoppages or breaks. It will also introduce and develop each player’s understanding of the traditions of the game of rugby which demands self-control, respect for opposition players and officials as well as good sportsmanship to name a few expectations for each player to learn and demonstrate.

Under 14 rugby is when players whether they are progressing from U12 or brand new to the sport learn the basic fundamentals of competitive rugby and what it takes to be successful. This is also the level when teamwork is key as well as respecting all involved in the game whether they are associated with our club or any other. Players will be taught to have fun, execute skills safely and correctly with the expectation players understand that for our coaches to be effective

they need to be focused, motivated and dedicated during practices and games. Players who master the fundamentals effectively at this level of rugby will usually excel later during their HS years and understand and appreciate the traditions of the sport and expectations to uphold this responsibility.

Saturday midday or afternoon games.

High School Girls Rugby Overview

High School Girls Rugby

  • Full contact / tackle version
  • Full Size playing field
  • Same rules and playing format as HS Boys & Adult Rugby
  • Increased fitness & conditioning levels required

Girls in grades 9-12 play together due to the current player numbers in Washington but this has been the format for the past 7 years and it has proved both safe and competitive for a player in any grade to participate. Girls games are played on a full-size field and following the same format and rules as boys and adult rugby. Tried and true methods are deployed by our experienced group of coaches to develop both a player’s understanding of what rugby is and how to play and their confidence that they can compete and play what for most is their first contact sport. With increasing athletic scholarship opportunities for girls to play rugby in Universities throughout the country our club strives to develop each players skills to allow them to continue playing club or higher-level varsity rugby in University. The camaraderie, friendships and bonds developed playing rugby are the highlight for many who choose to join our team. Typically, games are on Saturday midday or afternoon games

High School Boys Rugby Overview

High School Boys Rugby

  • Full contact / tackle version
  • Full Size playing field
  • Same rules/playing format as Adult Rugby
  • Increased fitness & conditioning levels required

High school boys rugby is typically divided into a JV & Varsity format much like other HS sports. Similarly, to most other JV teams this is a development format which is restricted to only 9th & 10th grade students in clubs which can support a separate JV & Varsity squad. Rainier typically offers JV & Varsity level rugby.

Some clubs with less players will have all of their HS players playing on one side. 11th & 12th Grade students within a club with both teams available are not supposed to play down to the JV level unless for a specific approved reason and can only do so after completion of a formal waiver approval process. Players in 10th grade who are deemed capable and more suitable to play Varsity rugby are permitted to do so after a player’s parents and coach have discussed this move and all parties have agreed this advancement is in the best interests of the player.

A very strong emphasis is placed on developing each player’s understanding of the traditions of the game of rugby which demands self-control, respect for opposition players and officials as well as good sportsmanship to name a few expectations for each player to learn and demonstrate.

Saturday afternoon games which are primarily local area games but some occasional travel.
